EXHIBITION

Bulgarisches Kulturinstitut „Haus Wittgenstein“
Ludwig Wittgenstein: Ein Haus für Gretl

“…Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein had been busy since 1925 with plans for a new city palais for her family and had already commissioned Paul Engelmann, a pupil of Adolf Loos, to begin with the drawings. She invited Ludwig Wittgenstein to try his hand as an architect and it was this trio who in 1928 realised a one-of-a-kind building − the only one ever actually built by a philosopher, full of unique elements and not classifiable into any architectural tradition. …”
Franz West repeatedly refers to Wittgenstein in his works and thinking. In the exhibition chairs complete the former dining room.

Ins Dunkle schwimmen

“… The exhibition Ins Dunkle schwimmen gathers works of art that deal with these contradictory demands in the context of artistic production, encountering abysses and limits in the process. On the one hand, it includes works from the Collection of the University of Applied Arts Vienna that open up the fiction of the “autonomous work of art” to re-negotiation. …”

Focus Franz West

“… The centerpiece is a work that is a new addition to the collection: Franz West’s nine-part series of collages for the 1990 Biennale, which takes an ironic look at the dialogue between artwork and viewer. The series is a sequel to his earlier Passstücke (Adaptives), portable sculptures that function as a temporary extension of the human body and invite the recipient to interact with them. …”

BOOK

Franz West. An Outdoor Sculpture

A group of sculptures was installed in front of the former studio on Esteplatz in Vienna’s third district in December 2022. The five untitled outdoor sculptures in different colors are made of epoxy resin and were placed by Heimo Zobernig. From 1996 to 2012, Franz West created several hundred such works, which represent an important part of his oeuvre.

“With the choice of bright, strong colors, he deliberately contrasted the objects with nature and the urban space. […] The reactions tot he work are understood here as an integral part of the work itself. Later, Franz West was interested in the idea that an interaction with the viewer talks place on a mental level”, says Ines Turian in the publication.

A project in cooperation with KÖR Kunst im öffentlichen Raum.

PRESS RELEASE

Austrian Court Makes Final Ruling on Franz West Estate
“The court ruling recognizes the late artist’s final wishes over the management of his estate”

Following the Austrian Supreme Court’s recent ruling, the dispute surrounding the legendary Viennese artist’s inheritance has at last been resolved. The ruling named Franz West’s sister, who has since passed away, the rightful heir. During her lifetime she has reached an agreement for the transfer of her brother’s artistic estate to the Franz West Privatstiftung (Franz West Private Foundation), which the artist had
established prior to his death to oversee the management and preservation of his works.

‘We are extremely pleased with this outcome. Finally, we can take action to make Franz West’s work visible again in the public realm, and to advocate for the significance of his artistic legacy. For us, this legal security provides the basis to do so. A number of questions remain to be resolved, but for now we are focusing on devising a forward-looking strategy to uphold West’s legacy, in partnership with museums, galleries and collectors worldwide’, says Roland Grassberger, nephew of the artist and board member of the Franz West Privatstiftung.
